Radiant Poem

Leonard Cohen Book of Belonging

Poem by Leonard Cohen

"Leaving Mt Baldy"

I come down from the mountain
after many years of study
and rigorous practice.
I left my robes hanging on a peg
in the old cabin
where I had sat so long
and slept so little.
I finally understood
I had no gift
for Spiritual Matters.
"Thank you Beloved,"
I heard a heart cry out
as I entered the stream of cars
on the Santa Monica Freeway,
westbound for L.A.
A number of people
(some of them practitioners)
have begun to ask me angry questions
about the Ultimate Reality.
I suppose they don't like to see
old Jikan smoking.

Radiant Song

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken

Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but

Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Book Mark for Soul Friend John O'Donahue

Radiant Quotation

" A poem is a place where the conditions of beyondness and withinness are made palpable, where to imagine is to feel what it is like to be.  It allows us to have the life we are denied because we are too busy living. Even more paradoxically, a poem permits us to live in ourselves as if we were just out of reach of ourselves."

Mark Strand in

The Making of a Poem

Ten Poems to Change you Life - Roger Housden

"In Ten Poems to Change Your Life Housden offers a unique map for the Soul's journey and encourages us to begin. Accessible, elegant, luminous, and wise, this book is Soul food."
-- Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., author of Kitchen Table Wisdom and My Grandfather's Blessings -- Review

In her book BLUE PASTURES, poet Mary Oliver states: "The three ingredients of poetry: the mystery of the universe, spiritual curiosity, the energy of language." Roger Housden does a superb job of incorporating these three key ingredients in his marvelous book,

TEN POEMS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE. I am on my second reading and just realized what a wonderful gift TEN POEMS would be for people who say they don't like or "get" poetry.

Ten Poems to Change Your Life

---------------

Barack Obama - The Audicity of Hope

Barack Obama's first book, Dreams from My Father, was a compelling and moving memoir focusing on personal issues of race, identity, and community.

With his second book The Audacity of Hope, Obama engages themes raised in his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, shares personal views on faith and values and offers a vision of the future that involves repairing a "political process that is broken" and restoring a government that has fallen out of touch with the people. ....

Rodger Housden

– Soul Friend - Mo Anam Cara

"If we deny our happiness, resist our satisfaction, we lessen the importance of their deprivation.  We must risk delight. - Jack Gilbert-A Brief for the Defense"

Roger Housden is the author of the “Ten Poems” series of poetry appreciations books.  These are books that we two soul friend, my partner Bee and I, invite everyone to read. We are in love with these books of soul friendship.

Poetry is central to The Anamcara Experience. Poetry is also central to many people’s lives.  Unfortunately, it only becomes a language of the centre of many individual lives at times of crisis or celebration.  These are times of living at threshold places.  Too quickly the moment and opportunity is gone and the language of the heart and the language that is at the heart of poetry is gone.

At the time of writing this article we await the inauguration of a new President of the United States.  This is Barack Obama. What distinguishes Barack Obama from his predecessor George W. Bush is his oratory ability. He has the ability through using language to inspire. The language is not so important as the actions inspired by the language.  After all, there is the cautionary tale in one of the world’s greatest orators, Adolph Hitler, who inspired the rise of violence through the national socialist movement in Germany during the lean 1920’s and 1930’s.

My soul friend Bee would like to add that she finally felt confident to cast a vote for Barack Obama after she read a poem in The New Yorker magazine that he wrote in college about his grandfather. Candidates have speechwriters but poems are a window to the heart, mind and soul.

The power of poetry has the power to transform lives.  This is by cutting to the very source of our common humanity.  This source is the sound of creation coming through as the written and spoken word.

At the time of this writing the world is in a financial crisis.  This mirrors our relationship to the misuse of that powerful energy we call money.  This has been misused for the purposes of short -term gain for the few over the many.  Speculators encouraged to risk for higher rewards take risks. The risk they take is with other people’s lives.

However, every little bit helps.  It helps tremendously to feel inspired.  Personally speaking, I would have these books by Roger Housden distributed to everyone who attends a doctor’s surgery, a hospital, or to anyone experiencing a minor or major crisis in confidence.  There is, I think, something for everyone in this book series.

Reading the poems by Hafiz, David Whyte, Leonard Cohen, Rainer Maria Rilke, Thomas, Mary Oliver, Naomi Shibab Nye – to name only a few – will invite your heart to open.  Sometimes you will want to sing your own poetry from the expansiveness that these poems and Housden’s commentaries invite. Sometimes you will be moved so completely by the beauty that they invite you might shed a tear.

For a moment or a few minutes you will be transported from the oratory of doom and gloom into the beneficence of those engaged in what the Irish call ‘love talking’ (geancannach). For a time you can even cross into the timeless.  For a time you accept and live the invitation of Rumi

Come out of the circle of time

                                    Into the circle of love.

Why is any of this important?

Because each one of us is important. Every though you think creates the world.  The world as you experience it both as an individual and in the collective consciousness is the sum total of all thoughts that have ever been.  Thought is energy.  It is neither created nor destroyed.  It changes form.

When you engage your mind with the kind of poetry in the “Ten Poem” series you become an alchemist.  You change the world.  Not every thought has the same power.  The thought energy of a Buddha, a Christ positively changes the negative through the power of millions of people. This is real good news.

This is why at The Anamcara Experience we encourage you to engage each day in feeding your mind with the language of love talking.  You are not invited to become a poet, writer or a scholar – although you might be led in that direction.  You are invited to radiate the poetry that creation invited you to be. You can become living poetry in each gesture you make.

You can become inspired through feeling the delight of heart language each day.  In this way you raise the consciousness of yourself and collectively through the scientific low of morphic resonance you begin to collectively alter the consciousness of the human species.

All this through reading poetry!

This is only the beginning. It gets better and goes higher. Thank you, Roger Housden!
