Paul Simon

Simon also appeared alongside George Harrison as musical guest on the Thanksgiving Day episode of SNL (November 20, 1976).

The two performed "Here Comes the Sun" and "Homeward Bound" together, while Simon performed "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" solo earlier in the show. On that same episode, Simon opened the show singing "Still Crazy After All These Years" in a turkey outfit, since

Thanksgiving was the following week. About halfway through the song, Simon tells the band to stop playing because of his embarassment. After giving a frustrating speech to the audience, he leaves the stage, backed by applause. Lorne Michaels positively greets him backstage, but Simon is still upset, yelling at him because of the humiliating turkey outfit. This is one of SNL's most played sketches.

RADIANT SONG

Simon states that he considers the title track the best song he has ever written.

Graceland

(Paul Simon)

Paul Simon - Graceland

The Mississippi Delta was shining
Like a National guitar
I am following the river
Down the highway
Through the cradle of the civil war

I'm going to Graceland
Graceland
In Memphis Tennessee
I'm going to Graceland
Poorboys and Pilgrims with families
And we are going to Graceland
My traveling companion is nine years old
He is the child of my first marriage
But I've reason to believe
We both will be received
In Graceland

She comes back to tell me she's gone
As if I didn't know that
As if I didn't know my own bed
As if I'd never noticed
The way she brushed her hair from her forehead
And she said losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees you're blown apart
Everybody sees the wind blow

I'm going to Graceland
Memphis Tennessee
I'm going to Graceland
Poorboys and Pilgrims with families
And we are going to Graceland

And my traveling companions
Are ghosts and empty sockets
I'm looking at ghosts and empties
But I've reason to believe
We all will be received
In Graceland

There is a girl in New York City
Who calls herself the human trampoline
And sometimes when I'm falling, flying
Or tumbling in turmoil I say
Oh, so this is what she means
She means we're bouncing into Graceland
And I see losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees you're blown apart
Everybody sees the wind blow

In Graceland, in Graceland
I'm going to Graceland
For reasons I cannot explain
There's some part of me wants to see
Graceland
And I may be obliged to defend
Every love, every ending
Or maybe there's no obligations now
Maybe I've a reason to believe
We all will be received
In Graceland.

Graceland

The lyrics deal with the singer's thoughts during a road trip to Graceland - the home of Elvis Presley

Critical acclaim for John O'Donohue' Anam Cara.

John O'Donohue is a man of the soul.  His scholarly meditation on the continuing relevance of Ireland's spiritual heritage has become a publishing phenomenon....  This poetic meditation has become a best seller on both sides of the Atlantic......  A lyrical epic prayer

Anam Cara Blessing

" May the light of your soul guide you.
May the light of your soul bless the work you do with the secret love and warmth in your heart.

May you see in what you do the beauty of your own soul.
May the sacredness of your work bring healing, light, and renewal to those who work with you and to those who see and receive your work.

May your work never weary you.
May it release within you wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration, and excitement.
May you be present in what you do.
May you never become lost in the bland absences.

May the day never burden.
May dawn find you awake and alert, approaching your new day with dreams, possibilities, and promises.

May evening find you gracious and fulfilled.
May you go into the night blessed, sheltered, and protected.
May your soul calm, console, and renew you.

Home - where my thoughts escape me
Home - where my music's playing
Home - where my love lies
Silently waiting for me

Homeward Bound by Paul Simon

There are songs that have a heart resonance for the individual concerned. There are songs that accompany them on their journey through life. There are songs that might pop into their heads and bring memories of when they were truly alive even if during that time there was emotional upheaval.

Heart song is an integral part of learning to be a friend of one's soul. This does not mean you have to be a singer but everyone can sing. It is only that you have learned to mistrust the sound of your own voice.

One outstanding singer/songwriter whose songs I love to listen to is Paul Simon. He has journeyed with me all through my teenage years, young adulthood and beyond. It was his songs that invited this Irish storyteller to leave Ireland and go exploring beyond my homeland.

Let this storyteller take you into what he considers the in depth meaning of the song entitled Homeward Bound.  Let me say at the outset that this is the writer's interpretation of this song and he does not assert that this was the original meaning intended by the songwriter.

The song begins:

I'm waiting in a railway station
Got a ticket for my destination
On a tour of one night stands
A suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned
For a poet and a one-man band.
Homeward bound. I wish I was
Homeward bound.

This is the song of the solo man. It is also the song of a wise man. It is in a way a modern Song of Solomon (Solo man, again) who was also the wisest of men, a man featured in the Bible and wonder tales.

The beautiful song begins with the combination of the two most powerful words in the English language - I AM. The songwriter uses the contraction I'm. This poet, this solo man (as all poets are) is waiting at a railway station. There is a play on words here. For the spiritual journey (and this song, for me, is surely about a spiritual journey) is the real way. Sometimes we arrive on a platform that means we have integrated life's lessons.

We have become initiates into the true self. We have learned the lesson of waiting, which is a different sort of waiting than that normally understood as a reaction to impatience. This is a waiting without waiting. At this station this waiting is rest for the journey to higher and higher stations of consciousness.

This poet and one-man band has a ticket in his hand. This is not just any ticket. It is the ticket into wonder. It is the ticket you are given when you have done the heart work. It is the ticket given to all those who are initiates. They invite the heart to open and journey on the real way that is inwardand metaphorically speaking upward.

This poet journeys into fleeting experiences. He is not carrying that much baggage on his journey. He is carrying only what is essential and that includes his instrument, a guitar. With this and his voice he sings heart songs while strumming and plucking at the heartstrings of his guitar. These fleeting experiences do not last longer than one night. They do not last longer than the turn of one cycle called a day. They might last the cycle of one lifetime but they would still end.

This solo man with his guitar wants more. He is waiting to come home. He is filled with the longing to come home. This is the longing of a spiritual journeyman seeking to come home to the Beloved. This is the longing of the soul for union with the Divine.

This modern day hymn of praise continues:

Home - where my thoughts escape me
Home - where my music's playing
Home - where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

This could be the song of a mystic. Three times the solo man sings the word 'home.' Such is their heart's longing to return. This chorus intimates where this longing is to be found.

It is found beyond the cascade of thoughts and the life of 'little me.' It is found within the music that is playing through your heart connection to the Universal Song. It is found in the patient waiting and surrender to the light of Love. Most of all it is found in that which only mystics and the solo man (this also includes solo woman) find value. It is found in that which the true individual treasures most - silence.

This silence is the communication device with the Beloved par excellence. It is the communication device that is always empty and therefore full. This is wisdom. It cannot be intellectually understood but has to be lived if only for an instant. In this instant you can come home.

In this instant, if you pay fidelity to the grace given, then you will travel far and still long for home until you realize that home is exactly where you are and always have been. When this happens you journey onward to the station of Love for the highest good of all. You play the music and shine the love light that simply waits for you without waiting within the timeless, placeless place of Love.

When you are the knowing of this sound of silence then the blessing is here and you are it.

Practice:

Take your journal and write about a song that talks to your heart. This can be one line. It can be a chorus or an entire song. What invitation is the song issuing? What state does this song invite within you?
