Retreat Centers

The Krishnamurti Centers are intended for the study of the teachings of J. Krishnamurti. It is for people who would like to be in a quiet environment where they could give full attention to these teachings and their implications in their own lives.

It is hoped and intended that people will use the Center, the teachings of Krishnamurti and the atmosphere of quiet enquiry here to deepen their understanding.

There is an extensive range of Krishnamurti books, videotapes, audiotapes and other records.

Schools

Krishnamurti started several schools in India, one in England and one in U.S.A. Since Krishnamurti did not lay down a method or philosophy, these schools are different in their approach.

However, they share a common interest in providing an education that is more than teaching of knowledge and skills and in attempting to educate for the art of living.

"What is life, the origin of all this the rivers, the valleys, the glory of the land?

Where are we at the end of two million years?

Hasn't man always sought something through religion?

Is the brain different from the mind?

Can the brain communicate with the mind?

When genetic engineering and computers meet what are you as a human being?

What is creation and what is invention? What gives life to a blade of grass?

Is there meditation without effort with no routine, measurement, or comparison?

Is there a brain that is not muddled up muddied by environment, by tradition, by society?"

Book Mark for Soul Friend John O'Donahue

Lecture given by J. Krishnamurti, in 1929, when he dissolved the Order of the Star of the East

"I maintain that Truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. That is my point of view, and I adhere to that absolutely and unconditionally.

Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproach -able by any path whatsoever, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or to coerce people along any particular path.

If you first understand that, then you will see how impossible it is to organize a belief. A belief is purely an individual matter, and you cannot and must not organize it.

If you do, it becomes dead, crystallized; it becomes a creed, a sect, a religion, to be imposed on others. This is what everyone throughout the world is attempting to do.

Truth is narrowed down and made a plaything for those who are weak, for those who are only momentarily discontented.

Truth cannot be brought down, rather the individual must make the effort to ascend to it. You cannot bring the mountain-top to the valley.

If you would attain to the mountain-top you must pass through the valley, climb the steeps, unafraid of the dangerous precipices.

You must climb towards the Truth, it cannot be "stepped down" or organized for you. Interest in ideas is mainly sustained by organizations, but organizations only awaken interest from without.

Interest, which is not born out of love of Truth for its own sake, but aroused by an organization, is of no value.

The organization becomes a framework into which its members can conveniently fit.

They no longer strive after Truth or the mountain-top, but rather carve for themselves a convenient niche in which they put themselves, or let the organization place them, and consider that the organization will thereby lead them to Truth."

The beauty that is Krishnamurti in form

"Freedom is not a reaction; freedom is not a choice. It is man's pretence that because he has choice he is free.

Freedom is pure observation without direction, without fear of punishment and reward.

Freedom is without motive; freedom is not at the end of the evolution of man but lies in the first step of his existence. In observation one begins to discover the lack of freedom.

Freedom is found in the choiceless awareness of our daily existence and activity.

Thought is time. Thought is born of experience and knowledge which are inseparable from time and the past.

Time is the psychological enemy of man. Our action is based on knowledge and therefore time, so man is always a slave to the past.

Thought is ever-limited and so we live in constant conflict and struggle. There is no psychological evolution."

J. Krishnamurti

– Soul Friend - Mo Anam Cara

J. Krishnamurti would probably count as my greatest soul friend.  He is the reason why this writing happens.  Without him there is the probability that the invitation from this soul friend to all you reading this would not be happening.

I was a very unhappy young man during my twenties.  Inside I felt very empty and alone.  I spent time when I did not want to continue to exist in form.  I fought to stay alive.  I grounded myself in Yoga and a love that sustained me.  This was a love of spiritual instruction that nurtured a heart devoid of nurture.

J. Krishnamurti and the light of understandingAmidst all this angst came a light.  This wasn’t just a moment of brightness in a day full of mental anguish but a revelation.  It was a moment when the whole world changed and my relationship to it changed in a instant.

I was traveling into Central London by train.  The day was bright and I had with me a book by J. Krishnamurti.  In this book he was writing about the meaning of what it is to understand.  When Krishnamurti is writing about understanding he isn’t talking about intellectual understanding.  He is talking about knowing and being the direct experience of Universal Intelligence.

I was absorbed with this passage on understanding.  I would read it line by line and began to be in love with it.  While absorbed in the invitation to real understanding I happened to glance outside the window and a window inside me opened.  In that moment, which seemed to last for a very long time, time in fact disappeared and I entered a paradox.

Understanding can never
be made into a habit, a matter of routine;
it demands constant watchfulness, alertness.
To understand, there must be pliability, sensitivity, a warmth that has nothing to do with sentimentality.

J. Krishnamurti

This is a paradox where you become the intelligence that forms worlds from the formless.  This experience is the certain knowing that the energy that creates this ever becoming we call life and is the feeling experience of Love.  So it was in a British railway carriage I came to the grace of the real way of living as one who understands who they are.  This is as one who lives the understanding of creation as Love in form.

Love creates for the joy of creation.  In such an experience there is a living paradox.  You know you live in form in a body in time and space and you also know you live in eternity as the formless.  All fear goes and all doubt goes.  This experience is not a theological debate.  The one who knows is the knowing and not the knowing about.

There is the certain knowing stated in the Bible, “God is Love.”  Because you are not separate from this you can also say with certainty that you are Love.  This is very different from being loved.  For you to be loved there has to be a subject-object relationship.  This is the nature of duality but is not the direct experience of Oneness.  This subject object dichotomy is not the experience J. Krishnamurti refers to when he writes about understanding.

In the spiritual journey this would be called an initiation.  In Buddhism, it is called stream entry.  This is a point on the journey when all those invitations, in whatever way they come to you, are realized to be more real than anything you could ever imagine or think about.  The intensity of such an experience will tend to fade but if one pays fidelity to such an experience then the scent of the perfume of the eternal remains.

It is the perfume of the eternal that is the invitation contained in the writings of The Anam Cara Experience.  It is the invitation to the opening of the window of the soul so that you can befriend what the Sufi’s in their glorious poetry refer to as “The Friend.”  This Friend is the universal intelligence that creates all forms for the joy of creation.  This Friend is never separate from its total transformational embrace or what the Celtic poet John O'Donohue calls The Invisible Embrace.

This initiation is not enlightenment but it is the perfume of enlightenment.  Will it make your life easier?  Did it make my life easier?  What I will say for certain is that I cannot imagine what living life without this grace experience would be like.  It has made me more loving and given me a real confidence in my ability to love. I am not at a loss for love and I suspect now I never will be.

Often in my life people have come to me and asked, “Tony, what is it that you know that I don’t?”  Of course, what I know isn’t intellectual knowing.  I don’t claim that what I know is mine because it comes from beyond.  I do claim that I have lived in time and form the awareness of what it is to live eternally.  I do not claim the physical body lives eternally but that the awareness that animates the body, without which life in form cannot be, does live eternally

In one sense all that I have written above are only words.  They are not the essence of that living experience.  They are not the perfume of eternal life but merely a description.  Still, words are important as pointers.  This perfume of the eternal was poured in and through me via the transmission of the written word.  It can be poured through you while making love, watching a sunset, walking on a beach (as happened to my sister Mary) or in a myriad of ways.

This perfume isn’t something you earn.  It is more a process of allowing than one of acquisition.  It is really who you are.  When you allow it to flow through you, in truth you cannot say it is yours.  You can say it is the gift of Creation as the movement of Love in form coming through you.  What do you do with this movement of Love through you?  If the experience is true then all you will really want to do is to pour this gift into the heart of everyone you meet. This is not to be confused with promoting some religious teaching that one is attached to.

You will also want to hang onto it as I did.  It will give you everything you want.  If you want love, as I did, then you will get it in a way you might never have imagined.  If you are after money then it will be yours.  If you are after sex, again this will be what will be poured into and through you.  Your life will become sensational.

In time you will lose the intensity of that direct connection to Love.  Then the next stage of the journey begins.  It is the stage when you go searching to find it again.  Except this time you are a little wiser and, hopefully, somewhat more humble.

J Krishnamurti and the power of understanding

This is not a practiced humility.  It is a humility that arises from the realization of the gift available to you from Creation to be one who knows they are living and loving flow of forever.  This time you are aware that the primary dimension is timeless.  Your work then becomes the work of discipline and surrender to the paradox of the emptiness in you that is forever full.

You empty yourself in order that the fullness, power and glory of Creation can pour into you and express as the healing power of Love in action.  Is there a greater journey than this?  For me, as one who is graced the perfume of knowing, I can say a categorical,  "No."  This journey is the only real journey.  It is the unending journey into higher and higher expressions of Love in form.

This is real in-form-ation.  This is true understanding.  It comes from the Celtic spiritual tradition that values the longing for Love.  This is also the Sufi way – the mystical way of Islam.  This is the heart's longing to be in union with the Friend.  This is the beginning of soul friendship. It is the invitation extended by this writer in the Anamcara Experience.

The great German mystic Meister Eckhart said,  “If you can say thank you only once then this will be enough.”  My thank you would go to the one J. Krishnamurti who graced me what it means to understand.

At the beginning of this book the Irish mystic George Russell (AE) wrote:

"I dKahlil Gibran_Soul_Friend_and_Propheto not think the East has spoken with so beautiful a voice since the Gitanjali of Rabindranath Tagore as in The Prophet of Kahlil Gibran, who is artist as well as poet.  I have not seen for years a book more beautiful in its thought, and when reading it I understand better than ever before what Socrates meant in the Banquet when he spoke of the beauty of thought which exercises  a deeper enchantment than the beauty of form..... I could quote from every page, and from every page I could find some beautiful and liberating thought."
